I've started a new project. Hopefully it will be my first submission to the site and I'll finish it. I'm writing this to hopefully keep me motivated and see it done. I think it's a really good idea and is something I would love to play, and hopefully others will love to play too.

It's planned to be a turned-based 4x game, though watered down a bit. You'll colonize planets and set up trade networks, and then fight off pirates or enemy players looking to take your territory. You can respond with a fleet led by your flag ship, which you control during battle to help tip the tide in your favor.

I'm thinking the combat with the flag ship will be similar to FTL, with some minor changes. The biggest is that you'll be fighting against and with a fleet of ships. While you are dealing with a single large ship, or several smaller ones, your fleet will be fighting the enemy fleet. During your battle you can call in support from your fleet to help you.

Each ship type in your fleet is customizable with weapons you've researched, changing what support they can give in battle. Some will benefit more to the fleet fight, others will give you better support in your fight. One example could be giving your large Battleships artillery guns that allow you to call in artillery fire on a target, but makes them vulnerable to close combat. Other ships can be fitted to defend them and engage enemies at close range, but won't give much support. The goal is to have different fleet and battle strategies.

Currently I have a galactic map and players, through a simple (read 'bad looking') GUI can select planets, upgrade them (build mines, research facilities, etc), and end their turn to gather their income. Sometime soon I plan to finish the GUI (so my eyes don't hurt too bad while debugging) and add the ability to make ships by spending resources. Hopefully I'll have those done by tomorrow and start adding fleet movement and the base work for the AI next week.
